DJ DIK – Hermosa Beach – Cali

dj dik mixed magazine hermosa beach

Meet Hermosa Beach’s very own DJ DiK. Here is a guy that may have it all figured out. This DJ lives a block from the beach in Hermosa Beach, California where the waves are perfect and the sun sets like a perfect painting. Right around the corner is an awesome lounge called Ocean Bar where DJ DIK sets the party off for all the local surfers and hot chicks. Maybe he fell into the situation or planned it but either way it’s not a bad way of life and all we can do is respect it.

In The Beginning

Richard Podgurski, aka DJ Dik, truly has followed his dreams. The 2002 Redondo Union High School graduate discovered turntables and DJ-ing during his junior year, which would later lead him to drop out of his studies in sociology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

“I left the island to finish school and pursue my DJ goals…I wanted to be fully committed,” says Dik. “I’ve always wanted to run my own business, since I was an 8-year-old kid washing my neighbors’ cars to buy turtles for my backyard. So college wasn’t really my thing.”

Of course, not all careers are found in a text book. A job is a job, a career is a life. Hopefully a job doesn’t become a life, and the choicest careers are based in passion. Dik began to realize that.

“My very, very, very first ‘gig’ was at a friend’s birthday party, junior year of high school. His dad tipped us both 50 bucks and I quickly realized I could get paid devoting my life to making people dance and smile!”

“My first paid club gig was at Sangria in Hermosa Beach when I was 17 and was snuck through the back door to open for my mentor [Jason Pursley]. Some older friends and neighbors happened to catch my set and told me I had huge potential and should stick with it. On my walk home from the beach the next day I walked into Dano’s, which is The Shore now, and convinced the GM to pay me to play the next month’s Saturdays, only based on the fact that I had experience playing at Sangria. The next four Saturdays while I DJ’d, my parents came out to support me like it was one of my high school volleyball games… From there on out I’ve been hustling for gigs and never looked back.”

Dik’s yearning to get a room bumping and spinning followed him to the island.

“I had my turntables shipped out there so I could make some scratch on the side,” he recalled. “I scored a residency at a bar-club in downtown Waikiki, and gained popularity playing some of the biggest parties the campus housing could handle… It later led to a dorm/housing trespass ban, where I couldn’t even step foot on housing grounds or I could get arrested. I saved the legal documentation as a sentimental trophy of excellence. I lived on the island for another year, and it constantly felt like I had no future working so hard on a pebble in the middle of the ocean.”

DJ Dik oversees weekend entertainment at the Ocean Bar in Hermosa Beach Thurs-Sun, while typically DJ-ing every other Friday night. He’ll be playing the D-Man Festival at Redondo’s Seaside Lagoon this Saturday and will also be personally DJ-ing SOL Sundays on Sept 11. For info or booking, contact DIK@DJDIK.com

Interview

How did you get started as a DJ?
17 years old was my first legit club gig ever… but i think playing my dads drums growing up and my best friend owning Technics contributed to my start as a DJ.

Where is your favorite club to perform?
Right now its 1 block from my house at a roof top lounge called Ocean Bar in Hermosa Beach… but my Favorite 500+ capacity nightclub is the Ivy in San Diego

What club brings in the finest ladies?
Ocean Bar for sure… its right on the Beach and surrounded by very successful people so naturally they flock the salmon of capistrano

How old where you when you got your first turn tables?
I picked up the Stanton Scratch Pack when i was like 16… got rid of those in less then a year because i quickly realized no price tag was too high for a legit pair of Technics

What separates you from other DJ’s?
Im different because not onyl do i bring tons of energy to the stage … Im also not afraid to pop off with some really new un tested tracks during peak hours. I like to stay very current and no tow sets are the same. I literally wing it every time and its been working. Makes me less nervous not setting up an exact set. Just have to go with whats right for that moment at any given venue or special event.

What sounds and artist got you into DJ’s?
Growing up in LA i always looked up to the DJ’s on the radio… mainly power 106. I was too young to go to clubs and check out other DJ’s myself so thats all i had to listen to for new inspiration and new types of mixes.

Who is your favorite Rapper?
Slug aka Atmosphere. he raps about love and things that actually matter in life. Tribe Called Quest collectively is rad because of their club friendly style and energy. i wish i could play more rap nowa days but big nightclubs are basically all banging house and electro (during peak hour at least)

What is one of your most memorable experiences as a DJ?
Lately ive felt like ive been having one every weekend. traveling to so many cities all summer has really ramped up memorable experiences. But i will never forget back in highschool we threw an impromptu back yard RAGER after our class senior group shot. We all got let out of school after lunch time… long story short people were doing keg stands in their graduation robes. I miss those days.

Who is your favorite Mixed Magazine Model?
The one on the cover or on the next page LOL

What’s the hottest song right now?
Im sure whatever i say now wont be ”hot” by the time this article is released so im going to have to pass on this one. So much good new music comes out every week a change my mind almost every gig.

What is your favorite song ever if you had to choose just one?
That’s not even a fair question to ask a DJ. really??? ever???

Who will win the NBA Championship?
Lakers. duh.

How could life for you get any better?
Playing internationally. China and Japan have huge markets for high energy open format / house DJ’s like myself and wouldn’t mind spending some time broadening my horizons

Who is your favorite DJ of all time?
A.M. … he was a true Jockey of Discs. Favorite producer DJ??? Sounds cliche but DeadMau5’s shows are off the hook.

Do you have a schedule where people can catch you do work on the ones and twos?
Yes on my Facebook Fan page. I have residencies up and down the West coast… Mainly in LA and San Diego.

DJ Steve Smooth

Meet DJ Steve Smooth

Born and raised on Chicago’s Southside, Steve Smooth first immersed himself in the dance music scene working at a local record store and then a Chicago based independent record label. As a DJ, Steve worked to perfect his style of mixing by hitting the Chicago club circuit. This, along with Guest appearances on several college radio stations, helped him to gain recognition which eventually lead to a frequent guest spot on weekly Sunday mix show, “The Street Flava,” which aired on Chicago’s largest radio station B96 (96.3 FM).

Steve Smooth then began working in the studio producing and remixing tracks for some of the hottest dance labels. Mixes like “Everyday My Life” and the remix of the vocal anthem, “Time” by legendary House Diva Dajae, helped Steve quickly make his mark in the house and dance music community as well as receiving much deserved attention from Billboard Magazine. His first original production “Beat Freaker” created a frenzy on dance-floors worldwide. This Solidified him as a production force to be reckoned with. Steve’s skills in the studio earned him a part on Bad Boy Bill’s production team working on dance-floor hits such as: “Everybody;” “Costa Del Sol” and “Happy” as well as Bill’s mix compilation series “Bangin’ The Box” & “Behind The Decks.” In 2002 Steve seized the opportunity to tour with the world renowned DJ and Chicago native Bad Boy Bill. Steve took his skills as a DJ to countless shows around the world, including the UK, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong, and North & South Americas. He traveled and played alongside Bad Boy Bill for over 3 years. By working with Bad Boy Bill, Steve ended up hooking up with his then production partner, JJ Flores. Together, they found a signature sound that filled dance floors across the Globe. Peak hour tracks like “Release”, “Get Naked” & “Time for Love” became bonafide hits and led to the release on such labels as: Ministry of Sound (UK), Sound Division (Italy), Vendetta (Spain), Fine Tune (France) & Ménage Music (US).

Steve and JJ have remixed for many mainstream artists such as Nelly Furtado, Santana, & Chad Kroeger from Nickelback. They also produced remixes for house music artists such as Antoine Clamaran, Hatiras, DJ Dan, and Eric Prydz. Their remix of “Dancin” by Aaron Smith was a Top 10 hit in the UK Pop Charts in 2006. With the success of the Steve and JJ’s production, Ménage Music released their first full length album entitled “The Collection”. This album was just that; a collection of the most popular tracks produced and remixed by the duo to date. Soon enough the two found themselves back on tour. This time with the Bad Ass B*tches (a female dance group) for The Debauchery Tour. This tour took them to over 20 major cities in the U.S. and Canada. With extraordinary feedback from media and club-goers, Steve and JJ obtained a monthly residency at Spybar Chicago in their hometown, which was later moved to another Chicago venue, Crobar.

In 2007 Steve found himself growing musically more than ever before. He produced two rock EPs for the Electronic Rock Band, The Shock Stars. Within the 1st year the band has found themselves opening for other mainstream bands including AFI, but more impressively beating out over 2000 bands to win the MP3’s “Last Band Standing” contest to perform on the main stage of the infamous music festival “Lollapalooza.”

Early in 2008, Steve signed his exclusive deal to release his & JJ’s sophomore album on Ultra Records / Ménage Music. On October 7th, 2008 the full length album “Amp’d” was released. The album featured the single “Let It Go,” with vocals by B. Lee, which topped the charts and was in rotation on all of the major dance music radio shows in the U.S. Another single titled “Stay,” featuring Colette, was remixed by John Dahlback & Nick Terranova and became a #1 download on Beatport.com as well as was in BPM Radio’s Top 20 of 2009. Other popular tracks from the album included “Being in Love,” “Deep Inside These Walls,” and “Sex Fiend.” All of these were floor killers in nightclubs worldwide.

Steve has been voted one of “America’s Favorite DJs” according to BPM Magazine. Over the last 5 years Steve has continued to maintain an impressive DJ schedule by touring solo and headlining in 30 different countries as well as playing over 100 shows just in the past year alone. He is a resident DJ on Whet Travel’s yearly cruise, “The Groove Cruise” which packs a crowd of 2000 plus house music fans as well as many talented DJs from all over the world.

Steve is currently finishing up his 3rd full length album & first solo project that will be released in 2011. The first single “So High” has already created a huge buzz in the club scene as well as YouTube with a Music Video being a mash-up of the club scene from Spy Bar (Chicago) and a beach party in the Bahamas while aboard The Groove Cruise.

Mix Master Mike

Mix Master Mike

Named as one of the greatest DJs of all time by USA Today, Mix Master Mike got his initial itch for vinyl while growing up in San Francisco listening to his uncle’s extensive record collection. Years later, the moment that had the most impact on him was catching Grandmixer DST on stage with Herbie Hancock.

With his new found love for hip-hop and his foray into the art of scratching, Mike got involved in the mobile DJ business. Entering Dj competitions, rocking house parties, weddings and all those other “cutting the chops” type of gigs for experience and exposure.

It was at one of those parties that he met Richard Quitevis, better known as Q-Bert. Q-Bert wasn’t a DJ at the time, but was so impressed with Mike’s scratching technique that it had the same effect on him as watching Grandmixer DST had for Mike. The following day, Richard went over to Mike’s to watch him practice and it was there that the two quickly became friends.

In 1992, Mike was the first West Coast DJ to become World Champion by winning the New Music Seminar DJ Battle for World Supremacy in New York City. That same year, Mike, DJ Apollo and Q-Bert, known as the first ever scratch band, won the DMC World title.

In 1993, Mike and Q-Bert decided to take the competition to the next level by teaming up as a scratch duo known as “The Dream Team” and won the title once again.

In 1994, after winning three consecutive world titles and consistently coming out on top, Mike and Q-Bert were asked to step down from further competition as their domination was too much for the rest of the pack. The two performed an amazing “farewell” set and were honored to become DMC judges.

Shortly thereafter, friends and fellow turn tablists Triple Threat – Apollo (Apollo Novicio), D-Styles (Dave Cuasito)and Shortkut (Jonathan Cruz) – joined Mike and Q-Bert to form the Invisible Skratch Picklz (ISP), the most influential and recognizable turntablist crew in hip hop history. Though the ISP no longer exists, the five founders still remain close to this day.

It was a chance meeting at the Rock Steady Anniversary Jam in NYC in 1994 with Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys that would propel Mike to the next level. The two exchanged numbers and Mike often left crazy scratch messages on Adam’s answering service. Fellow Beasties Mario C and Mike D caught on to his scratch message craze and in 1997 requested Mike’s studio work for their multi-platinum album Hello Nasty. Soon after completion of Hello Nasty’s recording, the Beastie Boys offered Mike to become their resident DJ.

In the summer of 1999, the International Turntablist Federation honored Mike with  The Grandwizard Theodore lifetime achievement award for the advancement of the turntable as a musical instrument. The new millennium brought more amazing things from Mike. In March 2000 the Eye of the Cyclops EP (Asphodel) dropped to brilliant reviews winning the California Music Awards as “Best New Electronic Album,” with his first-ever mix CD Spin Cycle (Moonshine) following in 2001. Also check: Return Of The Cyclops (Asphodel), a special anthology of Mike’s works recorded before and after his seminal album, Anti-Theft Device (Asphodel, 1999). In 2004 , mike released “Bangzilla” which is nothing short of the titles reference. Its A Battle through the zektarian constellations as mike hits you with action packed kick drums to the chest and a relentless assault of hardcore scratch compositions bound to challenge your musical intellect.

Never one to take a break, Mike’s credits also include his weekly “SPIN PSYCLE” radio show on KROQ-FM Los Angeles, as well as working with EA Sports on the “SSX 1″  “SSX 2″ “knockout kings” and  “Jet Grind Radio” for Sony Dreamcast . He also produced music for the motion picture soundtrack for Jail, Hospitals & Hip Hop, hosted the ESPN Action Sports Awards, The MTV Movie Awards and is also prominently featured in the indie film “SCRATCH”.

Mike’s latest work , “NAPALM ROCKETS” is a collision of dubstep and  hip hop which is sure to Rattle the foundations of music. Follow the man , the myth, the legend we call “mix master” as his legacy continues.

Never one to take a break, Mike’s credits also include his weekly “SPIN PSYCLE” radio show on KROQ-FM Los Angeles, as well as working with EA Sports on the “SSX 1″ and “SSX 2″ video games and on “Jet Grind Radio” for Sony Dreamcast and Knockout kings . DJ Sega – Philadelphia

DJ Sega Philadelphia

At 24 years old, Robert Taylor Jr. espouses a knowledge of and enthusiasm for the finer points of music better than heads twice his age. Taylor’s father DJ Brother Rob raised him on classic soul, and his obsession with music grew from there. “I love every genre, from classical to heavy metal,” he beams. “I understand it and love it all. If you see me without my headphones, then I’m going through something and there’s a problem.”

He used to hold residency with quite a young black teenage following at Jamz Roller Skating Center and at Pinnacle Nightclub during the summers, both with DJ Dee Square. Taylor is known as one of Philly’s most respected “party music” DJs.

As a producer his stock has exploded on the scene with his club remixes of “Woo Hah!”, “Last Resort”, and around 100 other tracks; made only for himself prior to a career. Sega is a man with a mission, “I just want people to hear my music and feel whatever bad situation they’re in either doesn’t exist or won’t be a problem for long. When you dance and hear music that makes you move, you get a feeling that it’s gonna be all right.”

DJ Sega-The Angry Birdz Theme by maddecent

At first, Sega was merely a creative wizard. Taking songs we knew in the most non-club setting and riddling them with a hail of drum and bass patterns. However, something great has happened to Sega. He has developed his style yet further, and is applying his trademark intensity to dubstep, electro and pretty much anything in his path. Toddla T, Donaeo, Dr. Dre, Diplo, Major Lazer, Rye Rye, Young Chris, and Caspa have all recently been remixed by the boy turned man who dares to be king.

Influenced by a slew of recent remixes involving popular European bass and dubstep tracks alongside the same Top 40 material familiar to the work of many northern based club DJs, Sega has finally matured as a professional. He’s become a recognized name both nationally and internationally, and recently cemented himself as a headline talent with the most talked about DJ sets of the Mad Decent Block Parties in Philadelphia and New York City, and an Australian tour last year that is still widely discussed on the continent. In both the northern and southern hemisphere Sega has set a precedent for people demanding more.

The one thing about this man is you have to see him live and in person. All of his sets vary by selection of about 99% his own productions. His broad selection of his own music collection takes you on a journey within your own subconscious. The energy he brings is sometimes even unbearable to the average soul there to experience all the remixes he takes time to compose himself. There’s even been rumors of amnesia occurring the morning after seeing him spin.

Sega’s mastery of unique sampling over the hardest of breaks and creating deliriously fun tracks is what makes him one of the more inventive and most important disc jockeys on the planet. His intellectual quotient is far higher than you give a man credit for who took the time to sample Quagmire from Family Guy, Bill Nye the Science Guy, or even the current top selling game, Angry Birds. Sega just wants people to dance, and imagines a universe and landscape where there’s nothing better or more pressing to just get down. On his initial Mad Decent Records full length compilation New Jack Philly, the 80s and 90s cultural explosion harnessed on record ensures that not only will you get down, but you’ll be so intrigued and amazed that you’ll stay down with Sega’s cause forever.

He recently mixed and produced half of Rye Rye’s highly anticipated ”RYEot PowRR” mixtape. And is currently releasing a six song mini-mixtape collection called ”The DJ Sega’s Sixer Series”

An Interview with DJ Sega

How did you get started as a DJ?
I was already producing my own club music as a hobby for two years now. There were a few DJs here in Philly battling over being the #1 Party music DJ. And somehow my tracks got involved. I ended up meeting DJ Dee Square, who was at the time the go-to DJ for club music here in Philly. A week after we both linked up at DJ Touchtone’s house and recorded mixtapes. His was called ”School Bus”, which featured some of my tracks. After he was done I recorded my 1st mixtape called ”Uno”. That was the first time I ever touched CDJs or any turntable; and I recorded the mistakes and everything!

Where is your favorite club to perform?
I’ve spun in so many places and see so many cultures all dance to the same music. I honestly can’t pick anywhere as a favorite because each club has it’s own quality that stands out to me.

What club brings in the finest ladies?
Way too many to name! It seems like where my music and I go, the ladies are there and ready to bounce, shake, and drop some things I can’t mention here.

How old where you when you got your first turn tables?
Still til this day, I don’t and never owned turntables. Anytime I’ve spun on any tables, it was live in front of an audience going nuts. When I’m home I’m in production mode. I don’t get to practice mixes, cuts, and scratches like most DJs can. It’s not until I’m up onstage being blessed with a crowd and opportunities where I can actually spin my own tracks. But I’ve been spinning for about 5 years now; and producing for 7! (Damn time sure fly by when you doing something you love dearly.)

What separates you from other DJ’s?
Besides me not using headphones during my set, I try to summon the crowd’s imagination with my music. Another thing is the fact that when I’m spinning out at a gig, people expect me to come with only the best hard hitting tracks of mine. My whole set consists of only my productions/remixes. I like to give a show that’ll make people keep me and my music in mind at an alarming rate.

What sounds and artist got you into DJ’s?
Nobody. It was something that came along with me doing my own productions at home. It was 2 years after I was producing as a hobby where I finally touched any DJ equipment.

Who is your favorite Rapper?
The first one ever (at least to me)…James Brown!!!!

What is one of your most memorable experiences as a DJ?
I can’t help but bring up the 3rd annual Mad Decent Block Party. I only had 25 minutes to get my point across in my set and entertain the folks. As soon as I started, the attention on me was kinda unbearable. I actually blacked-out during my set because it was so surreal. I had my friends and kids crowd surfing in the middle of the street. Ask anybody who was there…or see the footage for yourself!!!! I felt so loved by my own city that I was overwhelmed when I was cut off and the crowd started to chant my name. I can play anywhere and it’d be fun; but there’s absolutely no place like home.

Who is your favorite Mixed Magazine Model?
I really can’t pick. These beautiful women all seem to have great and feisty personalities; I favor whoever’s more likely to love my music…lol.

What’s the hottest song right now?
Lol…My Angry Birds Song is generating quite a buzz online…have ya heard it yet?

What is your favorite song ever if you had to choose just one?
Wow…I CAN’T choose just one. But right now randomly, it’s Rain by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Who will win the NBA Championship?
I actually rather buss some ass in NBA Jam or NFL Blitz. But I always gotta represent my 76ers!!!! AND ALL HOMETOWN TEAMS!!!!!

How could life for you get any better?
When I’m more able to take care of my family financially by playing crowds; I’m talking HardFest!!!! I want to continue producing music that’ll change the bad moods of many into motivated to have fun and be happy.

Who is your favorite DJ of all time?
Wow! Once again, there’s so many; and most of them are from Philadelphia. But if I really had to choose, I’d be DJ Jazzy Jeff. His shows and mixes are incredible. I’ve seen him live quite a few times and only met him once; at the 1st Annual DJ Day. But his cuts are insane to me. I wish i could do half the things he can with two turntables and a mixer.

Do you have a schedule where people can catch you do work on the ones and twos?
I can pop up anywhere in the world, at anytime, and at any party. It may be promoted or it may be a surprise. They can keep updated on dates and music, if they follow me on twitter and like me on facebook. It’s not hard to get me near you…just ask anybody near you!!!!!!!!
